The organ of corti (or spiral organ), the sense organ for hearing is located in the cochlear canal.

It consists of the little hair cells (mechanoreceptors) resting on the basilar membrane and the gelatinous material called tectorial membrane.

This structure converts pressure waves to impulses.

It is found only in mammals.
