In aerobic respiration, which is the most common type of respiration, glycolysis is followed by a major stage called citric acid cycle. Citric acid cycle takes place in the mitochondria and controlled by enzymes. It was originally named as the Krebs cycle.

It could be summarized as : oxaloacetic acid + acetyl CoA + ADP + P + 3 NAD + FAD ―enzymes→ oxaloacetic acid + CoA + ATP + 3NADH + H+ + FADH2 + 2CO2
