According to the International Union of Biochemistry (IUB) system of enzyme classification, enzymes are named depending on the type of reaction they catalyze. Each enzyme is named by adding

the suffix – ‘ase’ to the root indicating the substrate on which the enzyme acts.

For example: The enzyme fumarase catalyzes the conversion of fumaric acid to malic acid.
