Some species of the algae are toxic for example, Gymnodinium and Gonyaulax species of Dinoflagellates. They produce a powerful neurotoxin called Saxitoxin which paralyzes the respiratory muscles of fishes and other aquatic animals which results into shellfish poisoning. This ultimately affects the human via; food chain.
