Blue-Green algae are found in diverse habitats like sea, salt water reservoirs, fresh water ponds, pools and ditches. They are very common in rice fields. The terrestrial species grow on moist soils and even inside the soils. Some species grow on moist rocks. Majority of the species are planktonic and freely floating while some are attached.

Blue green Algae can be found in marine water as well as in fresh water areas. Cyanobacteria can grow rapidly resulting in an algal bloom under the right condition. Light, temperature and nutrients contributes to bloom formation.
