The phenomenon of contraction of a whole muscle in response to a single stimulus is a muscle twitch. When a motor unit is stimulated by infrequent electrical impulses, a single contraction occurs which lasts only a fraction of a second. This response is called a muscle twitch. Muscle twitches can be fast, intermediate, or slow.
