Abrupt involuntary lowering of the diaphragm and closure of the vocal cords producing a characteristic Hic sound as the breath is drawn in. In medicine it is known as synchronous diaphragmatic flutter or singultus. Hiccups are generally resolved by itself without any intervention, except in certain chronic cases where medical intervention is mandatory.
