Gills are used for respiration i.e. for exchange of gases in aquatic (fish) animals. As these animals live in water they utilize the oxygen that is dissolved in water. Fish take in water through the mouth and release it over the gills. Gills are the site for uptake of the dissolved oxygen into the blood by diffusion.
