Transport of carbon dioxide is a complex process. The simplest method of carbon dioxide transport is to be carried as a dissolved form in the blood. Carbon dioxide is more soluble in blood than oxygen. There are three main methods for transport of carbon dioxide in blood:

  • Binding the carbon dioxide to blood plasma proteins.
  • Transporting carbon dioxide using the bicarbonate buffer system.
  • As carbamino compounds.
