The TCA cycle starts with the condensation of acetyl CoA with Oxalo acetic acid. In the mitochondria the pyruvic acid is converted into acetyl CoA with the release of carbon dioxide.  Then the acetyl CoA enters the tricarboxylic acid pathway or Krebs cycle in the mitochondrial matrix.
