Identifying the source of DNA is called DNA fingerprinting. The differences in sequence of DNA make every individual unique in their phenotypic appearance. Every individual has a unique DNA fingerprint. Identical twins share the same DNA fingerprint.

DNA Fingerprint is a process of identifying an individual based on his/her genetic sequences (identification of fragments of DNA).

DNA fingerprint are pattern of bands. In a DNA fingerprint, an individual’s DNA sample is radiolabeled and exposed to X rays making it visible, after being fragmented, replicated, and separated.

This technique can be used to establish paternity and in criminal investigations.

The technique of DNA Fingerprinting was first developed by Alec Jeffreys in 1984.
