RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN OSMOSIS AND TURGOR PRESSURE

The osmosis is the movement of molecules from a region of higher concentration to a region of lower concentration through a semi permeable membrane. Here the molecules are moving from a dilute solution to a concentrated solution.  When the living cell is placed in a hypotonic solution the water molecules diffuses into the cell, known as endosmosis occurs. This results in the enlargement of the cell and the lowering of the osmotic pressure is accompanied by development of another pressure. This hydrostatic pressure that is developed as a result of endosmosis is known as turgor pressure. The turgor pressure is exerted on the cell wall due to the entry of water inside the cell. The turgor pressure is responsible for the growth and enlargement of the cell. It also keeps the stem erect and leaves expanded. Thus osmosis pays way for the formation of the turgor pressure inside the cell.
