Fruticose lichen characteristics:

  1. Fruticose lichens have an erect shrub-like or filamentous morphology and can be approximately 10cm high.
  2. The thallus is complex, conspicuous and much branched.
  3. The branches are cylindrical, slender and ribbon-like.
  4. The thallus is attached to the substratum only at the base by a flattened disc.
  5. The thallus does not show differentiation of upper and lower surfaces.
  6. Examples: Evernia, Cladonia, Usnea
