The important functions of the plasmodesmata are:

  1. It maintains protoplasmic continuity among different cells.
  2. It transports materials from cell to cell.
  3. It also conducts stimuli between the cells.
  4. It permits the diffusion of solute molecules.
  5. Network of cytoplasm is known as symplast through which the movement of water and solutes takes place throughout the plant.
