Difference between heartwood and sapwood
Heartwood
S
apwood
In a tree the older, usually darker-colored wood at the center is called
heartwood.
In a tree the outer layers of wood that is lighter in color than heartwood, still-functioning xylem closest to the cambium is called
sapwood.
It is not of much use for the tree, except giving strength and support to the tree, as cells are no longer capable of water conduction.
It consists of functional cells, transport water and minerals.
