(1) Plasmids as cloning vectors:  pBR322, pUC19 are the most common types of plasmid vectors used in cloning. Some others are R1 plasmid (low copy number plasmid) and ColE1 plasmid (high copy number plasmid)

(2) Bacteriophage as a cloning vector:

i)  Lambda phage- double stranded DNA phage vector

ii) M13 phage- single stranded DNA phage vector

(3) Cosmids as cloning vector: Cosmids are cloning vectors which possess the properties of both plasmid vector and lambda phage vector. Plasmid origin of replication enables cosmids to multiply and cos site from phage vector allows the integration of any DNA fragment to it.

Examples: Cosmid pJB8, Cosmid pHC79, etc.

(4) Shuttle Vectors: It is defined as a vector which can be propagated in several different host species. It is usually a plasmid. Such vector can propagate in eukaryotes and prokaryotes (e.g. Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Escherichia coli) or in different bacterial species (e.g. Escherichia coli and Rhodococcus erythropolis).

Examples:

Yeast shuttle vectors- propagation in S.cerevisiae and E.coli

Adenovirus shuttle vectors- propagate in E.coli and mammals

(5) Artificial chromosomes: YAC (Yeast Artificial Chromosomes), BAC (Bacterial Artificial Chromosomes)
