The seeds of the corn does not split open it remains as one even if it does not have the seed coat. In corn seed only one cotyledon surrounds the embryo and it is lighter than that remaining part of the seed and is known as the endosperm. The cotyledons of the corn seed act as the storage organ and so it gives nourishment to the young developing embryo.
