Significance of meiosis:

  1. During meiosis, a definite and constant number of chromosomes in the organisms are maintained.
  2. By means of crossing over which takes place during meiosis, it provides a chance for the exchange of genes and thus resulting in genetic variations among species.
  3. A diploid cell produces four haploid cells by undergoing meiotic divisions
