The entire break down of the molecules occurs in the aerobic respiration. The net gain of ATP molecules is also high in the aerobic process. Oxygen removes the hydrogen where the oxygen acts as the final hydrogen acceptor. Since oxygen is necessary for respiration it is an aerobic process.
