Algae as an important bioremediation agent are used for wastewater treatment. Algae-based waste water treatment is an effective and sustainable wastewater treatment for municipal wastewater and industrial effluent as well.

Algae like Chlorella (Chlorella spp.) which are very easy to culture are grown in large shallow tanks, containing sewage.

As algae start to grow and multiply rapidly it produces abundant oxygen by rapid photosynthesis.

Microorganisms like aerobic bacteria use these oxygen and decompose the organic matter and consequently the sewage gets purified.
