The main significance of the callus culture is:

  1. By callus culture whole plants are regenerated by controlling the nutrient and hormonal constituents in the medium by the regeneration or organogenesis.
  2. The callus tissues are source of genetic variability so that this variable can regenerated to a new plant.
  3. The somatic embryos can be produced directly from the somatic cells of the callus tissue. These somatic embryos can give rise to new plant.
  4. From the callus culture it is possible to initiate the cell suspension culture.
  5. It helps in obtaining the secondary metabolites as the callus culture produces the secondary metabolites or drug. These drugs can be extracted directly from the cell without destroying the plant. There by the plants can be conserved as such.
