Role of the complement system:

  1. Complement system is a defensive mechanism consisting of serum or plasma proteins which attack and destroy the invading micro-organisms.
  2. It consists of a group of 30 serum proteins which include structural proteins and enzymes.
  3. Due to the movement of these proteins, pores get developed on the cell wall of the microbes.
  4. The surrounding fluid rushes into the cell through there pores which results in lysis of the microbial cell that leads to death.
  5. Complement system together with phagocytic barriers, inflammatory barriers, Natural killer cells and complement system constitute the second line of defense of the body.
