Position: It is the anterior part of the pituitary gland.

Parts:

  1. It is made up of three parts - Pars tuberalis, Pars distalis and Pars intermedia (intermediate lobe).
  2. The Pars distalis and Pars tuberalis are together called as anterior lobe of the pituitary.
  3. Anterior lobe along with intermediate lobe forms the adenohypophysis.
  4. It is intimately connected with the hypothalamus by a portal system of blood vessels called as hypothalamus-hypophyseal portal system.

Embryological development: It arises from the oral ectoderm as a glandular pouch called Rathke’s pouch.
