Progesterone is a steroid hormone that prepares the female body to become pregnant. It has got numerous functions. It affects uterus as well as other parts of the body. It is also used in contraception.
Regulates female secondary sex characteristics. Progesterone is required for breast development.
It causes formation and functioning of uterine glands. It maintains growth of uterine lining the (endometrial lining is maintained). During the menstrual cycle, progesterone stimulates growth of blood vessels, storage of fluids and nutrients in the lining of the uterus of female body. Thus preparing for the implantation of the fertilized egg
In female luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) stimulate secretion of estrogen and progesterone from the ovaries.
