Systemic circulation is a process in which oxygenated blood is carried from the heart to all parts of the body and deoxygenated blood is carried from all the body parts back to the heart. Circulation is done via blood vessels-arteries (carry oxygenated blood-exception is pulmonary artery that carries deoxygenated blood), veins (carry deoxygenated blood- exception is pulmonary vein that carries oxygenated blood) and capillaries.

A Portuguese doctor Amato Lusitano was the first to describe the Physiology of Circulation. The Systemic Circulation is a part of the Cardiovascular system. It carries the oxygenated blood away from the heart and the deoxygenated blood brings back to the heart. Dr. Amato Lusitano was first to describe the venous valves.

The term Pulmonary Circulation was first proposed by the Ibn al-Nafis.
