The affected water body can be treated with algaecide such as Copper Sulfate or herbicide to kill the blooms. However, even while the algal blooms may no longer be visible to the human eye, the algal cells may release some potent toxins in the water bodies.

Blue green algal blooms can be prevented by minimizing agricultural run-offs and the use of chemical fertilizers which may enter the water bodies. Excess nutrients in the water bodies harbor the growth of algal blooms.
