Denaturation is the process of chemical and physical breakdown of hydrogen bonds which results in deformation of specific structure and loss of its function.

EXAMPLE: Denaturation of DNA breaks the hydrogen bonds between their base pairs, results in the release of nucleic acids.

It is the first step involved in PCR. It refers to breakdown of hydrogen bonds between the base pairs at a temperature of 90 - 94°C. It results in single stranded DNA.
