The classification of the nerves is done as per their function.

(a) Afferent nerves – The are made up of sensory neurons hence their function is to carry impulse from the sense organ to central nervous system-CNS (brain and the spinal cord)

(b) Efferent nerves – They are made up of motor neurons hence their function is to carry signals from the central nervous system to the effector organs like the muscles or glands.
