Sieve elements are placed end to end with end walls bulging out. They may be transverse or oblique and have small pores or sieve pits. However, in non-flowering plants sieve cells remain separate and are narrower and more elongated. Their end walls are oblique but pores are less conspicuous. Porous areas are present on the lateral walls of these elongated sieve cells and are called the sieve areas.
