FUNCTIONS OF GOLGI APPARATUS IN PLANT CELLS:

  1. The cell wall of plants is made up of mainly polysaccharides along with some lipids and proteins.
  2. In plants, Golgi apparatus is mainly involved in secretion of materials of primary and secondary cell walls.
  3. These include formation and transport of glycoproteins, lipids, pectin and monomers for lignin, cellulose, hemicellulose etc.
  4. During cytokinesis of mitosis or meiosis, the vesicles which originate from the periphery of the Golgi apparatus, coalesce in the phragmoplast area to form a semi-solid layer, called cell plate.
  5. The unit membrane of the golgi complex fuses during cell plate formation and becomes a part of the plasma membrane of the daughter cells.
