The respiratory quotient of glucose which is a carbohydrate is 1, because equal amount carbon dioxide evolution and oxygen consumption occurs during the respiration.

The equation may be shown as:

C6 H12 O6 + 6O2 ——→ 6CO2 + 6 H2O + Energy

RQ = 6CO2 = 1.0
           6O2
