The main functions of citric acid cycle are:

  1. It helps in step by step release of energy during aerobic respiration.
  2. Carbohydrates, fatty acids and amino acids are breakdown by this common oxidative pathway.
  3. Acetyl CoA produces compounds for the synthesis of fatty acids, carotenoids, terpenes and gibberellins.
  4. Succinyl CoA is involved in the synthesis of pyrrole compounds of chlorophyll and phytochrome.
