Lichens are composite organisms composed of algae and fungi, each contributing to the benefit of both.

Lichens are the associations of fungi and algae which have formed a new morphological entity entirely different from either of their separate components.

The fungal partner derives food from the algal partner while the alga gets moisture and shelter from the fungal partner.
