Cohesion and adhesion are the two properties of a water molecule. The attraction between the two similar molecules is known as the cohesion and between the dissimilar molecules is known as the adhesion. It is because of the cohesive property; the water molecules remain together with strong mutual attraction. The water molecules are attracted to the wall of xylem vessels by the property of adhesion. The continuous water column in the xylem vessels is due to the cohesive and adhesive properties of water molecules.
