pH affect enzyme activity:

  1. An increase in hydrogen ion (H+) concentration i.e. pH considerably influences enzyme activity.
  2. Each enzyme functions most efficiently at a particular pH called Optimum pH at which the velocity is maximum.
  3. Generally, the optimum pH for the activity of most enzymes is in the range of 6-7.5 (neutral pH).
  4. Beyond these limits, denaturation of enzymes takes place.
  5. However, there are some exceptions.
  6. The optimum pH for some of the enzymes are listed below:
