ATHEROSCLEROSIS (hardening of the arteries) is a condition in which fatty materials are accumulated abnormally within the inner linings of the arteries.

Atherosclerosis is a risk factor for several cardiovascular diseases like heart attack and stroke, aneurysms, and peripheral vascular disease.

Risk factors for atherosclerosis are:

  • Obesity and Diabetes
  • Hypertension
  • Unhealthy lifestyle - primarily eating a diet that is high in fat
  • Family history of atherosclerosis
  • High blood pressure
  • Smoking etc.
