Both the vascular cambium and the cork cambium are lateral meristem which helps to increase the girth of the plant body. The vascular cambium gives rise to the secondary xylem towards the inner side and the secondary phloem towards the outer side. By the activity of a secondary lateral meristem called the cork cambium give rise to the phelloderm towards the inner side and the Phellem towards the outer side. The phelloderm is also known as the secondary cortex and Phellem as cork.
