The Cohesion tension theory explains how the water uptake place in the plants against the gravity only because of the force of cohesion of water molecules.  This theory was put forward by John Jolly and Henry Horatio Dixon. This was widely accepted one which could explain the upward movement of water through the vascular system in plants.
