The silica depositions which is due to the deposition of diatom skeletons (fossilized remains)  over centuries is called Diatomite.

When diatoms die, their frustules (shells) remain intact and accumulate at the bottom of the aquatic environments. There form depositions called Diatomite or Diatomaceous earth.
