Significance of mitosis

  1. It is an equational division which maintains equal distribution of chromosomes after each cell cycle.
  2. It maintains surface: volume ratio of the cell
  3. It maintains chromosome number in the resulting daughter cells.
  4. It occurs during growth and development of multicellular plants and animals
