Significance of mitosis

  1. It is an equational division which maintains equal distribution of chromosomes after each cell cycle.
  2. It maintains surface: volume ratio of the cell
  3. It maintains chromosome number in the resulting daughter cells.
  4. It occurs during growth and development of multicellular plants and animals
  5. It helps to maintain the equilibrium in the amount of RNA and DNA contents of a cell as well as nuclear and cytoplasmic balance in a cell.
