Eutrophication is the gradual to relatively rapid enrichment of waterways through the accumulation of nutrients.

In a lake or other body of water if the increase of nutrients is rapid, as it is filled in with silt and debris (particularly nitrogen and phosphorus), it constitutes a major problem of pollution facilitating the growth of algae and other organisms.
