The bryophytes show the alternation of generation between the gametophytic phase and the sporophytic phase. These two phases alternates each other, that is the gametophytic is followed by the sporophytic phase which is later followed by the gametophytic phase. There is regular alternation of generation between the gametophytic phase and the sporophytic phase is called as the alternation of generation. The plant body of the two generation differs in the morphology and structure, so known as the heteromorphic generation. That is the bryophytes exhibit the heteromorphic type of alternation of generation.
